A Photobook And Its Background

Homo Sapiens Danseur(se) Classique - More Than A Photobook

At first sight this photobook seems like any other, portraying a zoo. But behind each shiny page, a look into the ballet world presents itself, flavoured with some dark irony.

A university project, speaking of the years I spent chasing a perfection that human beings lose their health to reach, following a discipline of aesthetic control that doesn't allow space for inner development and true emotional states in one's life.

Homo Sapiens Danseur(se) Classique - More than a photobook

At first sight this photobook seems like any other, portraying a zoo. But behind each shiny page, a look into the closed ballet world presents itself, flavoured with some dark irony.

A university project, speaking of the years I spent chasing a perfection that human beings lose their health to reach, following a discipline of aesthetic control that doesn't leave much space for inner development and true emotional states in one's life.

Two excerpts from the book:

"This book presents the daily life of a less known species that we happen to admire on stage or in public places. The Homo Sapiens Ballet Dancer, also known in this book as the HSBD, is a living being as any other despite his lifestyle and his needs sometimes differing a little from ours."

"Light supply:

Neon light 4 to 7 hours a day (best in a dance studio or behind the stage)

Spot light A minimum of 4 hours per week. He can very well take 10 hours a week though.

Daylight One hour a day would be good. But as long as the ballet dancer gets enough neon and spot light, he can adapt very well to a low supply of daylight."
